ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book explores the causes and consequences of the interwar unemployment problem. It interprets workforce statistics in different ways. The book presents orthodox Keynesian views which contrast with interpretations adopted elsewhere. It analyses the interwar unemployment problem in economic, social and political terms and the second half of the book has a policy focus. The book presents an overall analysis of the unemployment problem, examining its magnitude and nature. It assesses, in particular, the effects upon living standards, diet and health. The book analyses political background to and effects of unemployment. It presents a ‘new classical’ view of interwar unemployment. The book focuses on economic policy opens with Peden‘s discussion of the influences which prevented Keynes from exerting a major influence on interwar economic policy.
