ABSTRACT

Art therapy assessment within the medical milieu takes on a different approach than typically found in mental health. Within the realm of medicine, clinical art therapy assessment can offer tangible evidence into the physical and emotional symptomology of a diagnosis. The use of art therapy assessments can provide physicians with a noninvasive approach to broadening medical interventions and instilling a sense of comfort within treatment. Art therapy assessments possess the ability to obtain diagnostic and symptomatic information, which can further aid the treatment team in determining both the patient’s status and course of treatment. Research on the impact of art assessments within medicine, although lacking, have found that the use of drawings could depict both physical and emotional change in response to treatment. The chapter aims to develop an assessment tool to monitor breast cancer patients in a noninvasive manner.
