ABSTRACT

Therapeutic quality is inherent in art, and there is a distinction between something being therapeutic and therapy. The photography program is 75 minutes of full engagement in creating an effective and meaningful art activity: the development of a photogram. Art gives the opportunity to gain new perspectives and develop coping strategies, which is important when working with a medically diagnosed client. Every emotion has its place and holds the potential to bring the patient closer to his or her goals in the process of healing with therapy. In contrast, in therapeutic recreational the facilitator strives to have a positive impact on the client’s life, building on the foundation established via experiences of joy and achievement through purposeful activities. The value of the arts as a natural therapeutic process provides insight into the camp’s principles, approach, and activities. The photogram illustrates how an activity can be therapeutic while maintaining its recreational approach to optimize a child’s healing process.
