ABSTRACT

This chapter illustrates the therapeutic benefits, and applications, of storytelling within expressive arts therapy within medical communities. Storytelling is part of culture, and helps people to keep their traditions, find connections, and meaning to life, making the process of storytelling a beneficial component within treatment. On the journey, the Hero, by overcoming the Challenge, enters the sixth stage of Change Process, where there is personal/internal growth. The power of storytelling with those in the medical community can be engaging and healing; allowing the medical patient to actively listen, and/or create their own story, creates a therapeutic platform for emotional, and even physical, processing. Storytelling can help see the world and our life in a different perspective. The creative storytelling process allows the client the opportunity to look around and develop creative ways of looking back at his or her own memories and an individual can find ways of seeing his or her personal journey to enrich his or her life.
