ABSTRACT

This chapter looks as how leadership has been defined, and poses the question why we need leaders at all. The author believes that the answer to this question lies in our attempts to address our existential needs. The chapter suggests that we use leaders to guard against existential dilemmas such as, freedom and power, loneliness, the need for meaning and certainty and the inevitability of death and other endings, and looks at each of these needs in relation to leadership.

The chapter also includes an overview of different leadership styles and types.
