ABSTRACT

In this chapter consideration is given to why we need a new type of leadership to address current challenges. A number of changes in the business world, including the development of IT, increased participation and desire for collective involvement, increased regulation and accountability, new challenges in recruitment and retention, the globalisation of business and increased ethical concerns are all cited as reasons why a new approach is desirable.

The chapter goes on to consider the growing realisation that leaders in this century need to be emotionally intelligent and looks at some leadership models and theories which have this at their core – connective leadership, authentic leadership, responsible leadership, resonant leadership. The author suggests that all these models reflect an existential approach.
