ABSTRACT

This chapter shows that the resulting reception of Benedict Cumberbatch’s performance is the creation of a ‘new Richard’ that exists outside the adaptation in the realm of fandom. It examines some examples of the active promulgation by Cumberbatch’s fandom of their devotion, predominantly posts on social media platforms such as Twitter and Tumblr. The chapter describes the community of fans of the actor Cumberbatch, in particular those who actively engage in fan practices online, on various microblogging and social networking websites. It examines the emotional reaction and reception of Cumberbatch’s performance as Richard III by his fandom. In relation to The Hollow Crown: The Wars of the Roses, numerous critics again turned to Game of Thrones to describe the graphic horror and violence, political manoeuvring and intrigue, and adrenalin-fuelled action and bloody battles that dominate this Shakespearean adaptation.
