ABSTRACT

This chapter explains in detail how to calculate the centroids, second moment of area and radius of gyration of sections such as beams, channels, angle sections that are used in the construction of buildings and civil engineering structures. The centroids of simple shapes are explained first followed by the calculation of centroids of simple/complex shapes by the process of integration. This is followed by the explanation of second moment of area and examples included to explain the calculations in detail. Radius of gyration is explained next, followed by the parallel axis theorem. An end of chapter exercise is included for the readers to reinforce their learning.
