ABSTRACT

Two methods of solving linear simultaneous equations are explained, i.e. the elimination method and the substitution method. This is followed by the application of the techniques developed to solve some practical examples in construction. In the second part of the chapter the solution of quadratic equations using factorisation is explained. This is followed by the solution of quadratic equations by the quadratic formula and completing the square. A range of worked examples are included to illustrate the solution of the two types of equations. An end of chapter exercise is included to reinforce the learning involved in this chapter.
