ABSTRACT

The influence of Andres Segovia upon the culture of the classical guitar has been immense. This chapter aims to examine both positive and negative aspects of Segovia’s approach to the guitar as well as discussing John Williams’ reaction to the enormous shadow cast by his former teacher. In William Starling’s book, Williams notes that Segovia’s method of teaching was very prescriptive and he encouraged students to imitate his particular style, rather than expressing their own individual ideas. Furthermore, John Williams has also stated that Segovia expressed his disapproval for much South American music, much modern music and indeed any editions or transcriptions other than his own. If Segovia successfully brought a refined and exclusive brand of guitar performance to the art music world, then it can be said that Williams made that style of playing more accessible among the general public.
