ABSTRACT

This chapter shows that the school activities in which art and craft may function as part of a larger whole, such as producing a play, holding a pageant, of decorating the school for a party or festival. Those present should be willing to take part in the ceremony, the Nativity drama or whatever it may be. Children’s playing is for themselves or one another, and so the orientation of it should be inwards towards the centre of a group, not artificially in one direction towards an audience. They are then learning poise and expressive gesture in using their whole bodies as well as their voices, and puppets should certainly never become a general substitute for drama and mime. The present time, we have a wider general interest in puppetry, and more opportunity for seeing professional performances than in the other crafts. The fine tradition and a source of inspiration for our work in schools in our rural crafts.
