ABSTRACT

Pessaries for Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) generally are placed into two categories. The first are support pessaries that rely on support from the patient's own pelvic floor muscles. The second category of pessaries are space-occupying pessaries. The proper positioning for support pessaries is in the upper portion of the vagina, above the level of the pelvic floor muscles. Cube pessaries are also designed to be positioned in the upper vagina and have the advantage of an attached string or loop to help with removal, allowing some patients to self-manage their pessary. Pessary fitting is essentially a trial-and-error process, and providers are aware that it is necessary to try several different types and sizes of pessaries to achieve a successful fitting. Symptoms related to POP can affect quality of life , and women with POP have a negative body image compared to women without POP.
