ABSTRACT

In May 1863 Elizabeth, having completed her theoretical anatomy and physiology, said a grateful goodbye to Dr Day and moved on to Edinburgh. To celebrate Elizabeth’s twenty-sixth birthday on 9 June they made an expedition into the Trossachs, using third-class carriages and temperance hotels to save money. Sophia Jex-Blake took command and Elizabeth was content to leave the master-rôle to her friend, entranced as she was by the beauty of the countryside. Newson Garrett by was impatient with this long-drawn-out cautious exploration. Let Elizabeth go to America, where she was sure of a degree, and he would foot the bill! Patiently, she persuaded him that she would rather return to St Andrews for the winter session and try to gain admittance there. At the end of October 1862 Elizabeth Garrett arrived in St Andrews again, ready to seek admission to the winter session at the University.
