ABSTRACT

Suppose that the postulation of the Logical Form T-subjects is not limited to the grammar of Japanese but is extendable to the grammar of other languages. This chapter proposes an analysis that allows us to neutralize such discrepancies between Japanese and English. If successful, such an attempt will permit us to extend the T-subject Analysis of Logical Form representations from Japanese to English, and take a significant step toward the reduction of the language-particular variations of the basic features of Logical Form. One important question yet to be answered in the Subject Raising Approach is what triggers the application of Move-alpha for the derivation of I-subjects in English. The chapter also proposes that the Subject Raising in English is triggered by the extension of the Projection Principle and the Case Filter. If this approach is basically correct, it will make a prediction that certain base-generated T-subjects may surface in their original positions in the following way.
