ABSTRACT

In thinking about the Latina identity in my field of sound I am constantly trying to navigate my way. My testimonio breaks the silence that exists in these spaces. In the world of sound we exist as the few who dare to brave the whiteness of walls, who dare to pierce the silence with our sound. In my practice I subscribe to the practices of another Latina outsider who established a method for listening with your entire self; Pauline Oliveros. According to her “Deep Listening” practice, there are two ways to go about audio: listening and hearing. To hear is “the physical means that enables perception. To listen “is to give attention to what is perceived both acoustically and psychologically”. As an outsider I observe what I hear and listen to and create my own space within these realms.
