ABSTRACT

145 A dog presents with acute onset fever, lethargy, and icterus. On physical examination, you note that the dog has anterior uvetitis. You suspect that the dog may have leptospirosis.

i. What diagnostic testing methods are available to assess for the presence of leptospirosis? What are the shortcomings or problems with these methods?

ii. Assuming you diagnose leptospirosis in this patient, what antibiotic therapy would you prescribe?

iii. How would you manage this patient to minimize the potential for zoonotic spread to hospital staff and the dog’s owners?246
