ABSTRACT

23 You have been treating a dog for chronic renal insufficiency/failure for a period of several months. The dog presents as an emergency, having had several seizures. On physical examination, the dog is markedly obtunded and has vestibular signs. You measure the dog’s blood pressure (oscillometric) and determine that the blood pressure is 205/145 mmHg.

i. What are the criteria for a hypertensive crisis?

ii. How would you plan to treat this dog?

iii. How would your treatment plans differ if there was no evidence of target organ damage?
