ABSTRACT

48 A 2-year-old male castrated Australian shepherd dog from Dallas, Texas, presents with a 10-month history of diarrhea and weight loss. A fecal flotation was negative and trial antibiotic treatments (metronidazole and amoxicillin/clavulanic acid), anthelminthic therapy (fenbendazole), and dietary trials (low-fat and novel protein) were performed with no improvement. A course of prednisone resulted in an initial improvement of the diarrhea, but it later worsened significantly despite therapy. The dog is up-to-date for vaccinations and heartworm medications and lives predominantly indoors with two other dogs and cats.
