ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we’ll consider a culturally relevant approach to teaching our students reading strategies that calls for students to apply the reading strategies they learn in school to out-of-school situations. First, we’ll examine the key components and features of this approach. Then, we’ll reflect on it can be beneficial to our students. After that, I’ll describe an instructional process that you can use when putting this idea into action with your students, including examples of how I implemented it with fifth-, eighth-, and tenth-grade students. Finally, I’ll share some final points about the ideas presented in this chapter to consider for your future instruction.
