ABSTRACT

In Chapter 3 we move into helping teachers understand how P4C is done in the classroom – in either an elementary or a high school. It describes a “community of inquiry” and how to form one. Seating positions and required teacher behavior are explicated. Required student behavior is also explicated in terms of initial “rules” for interaction. The importance of skillful questioning is emphasized – not only by the teacher but also by the students. The search for truth does not just concern the factual – aspects of social, emotional, and spiritual intelligence are involved also. A route map for those just starting is outlined. A lesson plan in seven steps is described. Three stages of development of P4C over time are also described as a plan for the maturing of the process. Many Resource Website downloads are available to scaffold this. Also considered is how the process might be modified for operation in kindergarten.
