ABSTRACT

In Chapter 6 we ask, ‘What is thinking?’ A big question! We can break down ‘thinking skills' into a number of specific component skills with which teachers might feel more comfortable. Again, the distinction between creative, critical and collaborative thinking is made. Creative thinking is the generation of statements, contentions or hypotheses. Critical thinking is the evaluation of the worth or veracity of these. P4C goes beyond inductive and deductive logical reasoning, which connect to critical thinking. Creative thinking is equally important, and methods to advance it are outlined. There is plenty of evidence that the general population does not follow these precepts. Further, no child is ever excluded from P4C.
