ABSTRACT

This chapter explores nine or ten important theoretical discoveries antecedent to the nineteenth century as compared with thirteen during that century. It presents the comparative lists of the great inventions and discoveries of the two eras. The chapter considers the change effected in science, in the arts, in all the possibilities of human intercourse, and in the extension of our knowledge, both of our earth and of the whole visible universe, the difference shown by the mere numbers of the advances will have to be considerably increased on account of the marvellous character and vast possibilities of further development of many of our discoveries. Both as regards the number and the quality of its onward advances, the age in which we have lived fully merits the title that is ventured to give it of—The Wonderful Century.
