ABSTRACT

As a result of free movement for people inside the European Union and of a war waged against certain types of migration rendered illegal, the militarisation of checkpoints on the external borders of the EU has continued unabated since the turn of the century. One of the political repercussions of the intensification of so-called “illegal” immigration in the summer of 2015 was that the very principle of freedom of movement was called into question by member states and by the European institutions. Frontex agency has a mandate to prevent irregular crossings of the borders of the EU, especially its maritime borders. Frontex’s activity has never really made it possible to prevent irregular arrivals from across the Atlantic and Mediterranean. The agency has failed to achieve its declared objectives, despite surveillance of European and international waters on an unprecedented scale that is unable to ensure basic protection for people.
