ABSTRACT

This introductory chapter explores new media visuality where the increasing saturation of the visual reconfigures our ways of seeing and perceiving the real. What awaits and confronts the wired body in terms of this new media visuality takes us into journeys of both the known and unknown others, and also a struggle with ethical questions and, more importantly, the morality of consuming the self and the wider world through the screen. Where once we domesticated the screen within the hearth and the home, the screen now targets the mobility of the corporeal body while colonising vision through its endless seductions. This chapter position new media visuality as a contested domain for celebrating the aesthetics of the wired body but equally the impoverishment of humanity through this mediated visuality.
