ABSTRACT

The third part of the COMPASS model is about appropriately managing data. There are many different ways to collect data. It is helpful to include a mix of quantitative measures and qualitative measures. After gathering the data, provide an opportunity for all teachers to study the data and reflect on its meaning. Engage teachers and other school personnel in conversation about the data, patterns that emerge, and meaning for their work together. One way to gather data about the curriculum is to organize lesson study groups. After gathering the data, the information can be used as a springboard to launch conversations at the faculty, grade, or departmental level about the experience of students. An effective way to gather information on the curricular and instructional experiences of students is to conduct a shadow study. Shadow studies involve selecting students at random and following them throughout their day.
