ABSTRACT

Ancient Egypt was a great trade city, and, as such, was full of racial diversity and worldwide cultural influences. Many people were moving to Egypt from other parts of Africa and Europe. Pictures of Egyptian mummies show that people had a variety of hair colors and textures. The hair colors range from dark brown to light golden brown, and the hair textures range from more typically Caucasian straight hair to curlier, coarser Afro hair. This racial diversity is very much evident in their fashion and hair choices. Due to the incredibly warm climate in Egypt, many people simply shaved their heads and wore wigs. Wigs were especially commonly worn for ceremonial occasions. A restored Egyptian wig, made of hair and decorated with surviving golden bands. This wig is on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. https://s3-euw1-ap-pe-df-pch-content-public-p.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/9780429422713/8fb8988b-9e46-4052-92ca-f3b9647eb14c/content/fig2-2.jpg" xmlns:xlink="https://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"/>
