ABSTRACT
Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan, who is known as Bacha Khan is one of the most controversial social reformers and pacifists of Pakistan. The mainstream narrative does not accept him as a person of importance in any positive sense. He is either shunned from the textbooks or talked about in every negative manner. His contribution is but accepted by the world at large as a personality who promoted peace in a notoriously violent people in the world, the Pashtoons in northwestern Pakistan. The reasons for this symbolic annihilation could be traced back to the beginning of Pakistani polity where an alien nationalism was imposed through state narrative to accommodate a group of people who did not have any local cultural roots. The need to reconstruct the cultural and political narrative in Pakistan on the basis of Bacha Khan’s ideas and actions is greatest at the time when the country is in the grip of violent extremism.
