ABSTRACT

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the academic theory and practical development of computer systems that can perform human-like tasks, such as speech recognition, visual understanding and making decisions. Academic work has shown that AI can be practically used in construction supplies of basic raw materials, such as aggregates. Global surveys have shown that investment in AI, when carefully project managed, reaps financial dividends for early adopters, with 83 per cent claiming moderate or substantial benefits. AI used in construction is connecting data and machine learning to predict project risks. Artificial General Intelligence, also known as Strong AI, is some way off, since creating a software that can mimic the workings of the human mind is fiendishly difficult. Compared to other industries, construction is virtually bottom of the league table in adopting AI. This is typical of the industry’s conservative nature to all things technological.
