ABSTRACT

While the research examining relationships between adolescent use of pornography and behavioral outcomes is limited, the literature that exists is important for the helping professional. This chapter explores those research studies and provides context for helpers to best use these data when working with young people. The chapter discusses issues related to consumption of sexually explicit Internet material (SEIM) and its relationship to sexual behaviors. Specifically, the chapter examines topics related to sexual experience and casual sex, such as the age of first sexual encounter and number of sexual partners. The chapter also examines high-risk sexual behavior, sexual aggression, sexual violence, victimization, and the potential addictive nature of SEIM consumption. Research related to the relationships between SEIM consumption and nonsexual behaviors (e.g., conduct issues, substance use) are also discussed. Finally, recommendations for applying the findings to clinical practice are provided.
