ABSTRACT

Culture is a critical element in any helping relationship, and the development of a therapeutic alliance depends on the cultural competence of the helper. How culture intersects with pornography is of significance to anyone who works with adolescents, and understanding these relationships can be vital to the success of the helping process. This chapter explores the intersection of pornography with a number of cultural constructs, including age, gender, political ideology, worldview, religion, and sexual identity. These relationships are discussed as they relate to adolescents who have virtually unlimited access to pornography online and how helpers can use this knowledge to further develop their skills and evaluate their own attitudes and beliefs about sexually explicit material.
