ABSTRACT
While the Philippines shares with its neighbours a common colonial background, it exhibits certain historical particular ities absent from the reality of its sister nations. In many ways it does conform to generally expected lines of develop ment and response but expectations are just as often defeated because of failure to consider an obvious but overlooked or glossed-over reality. I refer to the diffusion and actual regression of national consciousness.
