ABSTRACT
Tanzanian trade unions were under political tutelage during three decades of centralisation and political control. Despite the process of democratisation that got under way they are still weak but on the move to gain momentum and autonomy The country is in the grip of a major economic crisis that various Structural Adjustment Programmes have been unable to resolve. Economic performance has improved slightly but it is the ordinary Tanzanian people who have had to pay.
