ABSTRACT
Chapter 1 introduces the iron-carbon diagram. This chapter narrates the development and importance of iron-carbon (steel) alloy. It also narrates the allotropic modifications of the iron with respect to temperature and pressure. The iron-carbon diagram and the invariant reactions of the diagram are explained. The resultant microstructure under equilibrium cooling conditions with respect to carbon content and the eutectoid reaction are discussed briefly.
