ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with the importance of surface hardening techniques for the industrial components. The two major surface hardening techniques, namely, case hardening and chemical surface hardening, are described. Case hardening techniques such as flame hardening and induction hardening are explained in detail along with steels suitable for case hardening. Chemical surface hardening methods such as carburizing, nitriding, carbo nitriding, and boriding are explained briefly. The advantages, limitations, and the properties achieved through these surface hardening techniques are also described.
