ABSTRACT

Poland is a country with a long turbulent history, whose strong national culture has helped the Polish people to survive. In Poland there are at least two areas where the postulate of equal rights for both men and women has been implemented: the law and education. Women constituted 57 per cent of those in nationalized agriculture and 70 per cent of those on private farms. The direction of change in the family is toward equality in household tasks and joint decisions by both husbands and wives. The fact that Polish wives and mothers have jobs has not much influenced the distribution of domestic responsibilities. The initial impulse that set in motion profound changes in the situation of women in the socialist countries came from political decisions grounded in ideological premises. A managerial post is practically unattainable for most Polish working women because they must at the same time run a household – a difficult and absorbing task, given Polish conditions.
