ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the importance of EAP (English for academic purposes) instruction at the postgraduate level with the focus on courses for those majoring in science fields. We specifically describe an EAP course offered for PhD candidates at a graduate school of medicine in a research-oriented university in Japan. EAP courses at graduate schools are attracting unprecedented interest not only from practitioners of English language education but also from learners in many disciplines. The reasons are very clear: English as a lingua franca is indispensable for communication via research articles and conference presentations. Also, many academic institutions offer courses and programs taught in English to increase the number of international students. This chapter presents details of activities and assignments for classes focused on speaking and writing.
