ABSTRACT

During the twentieth century, herbaria were driven away from their roots since they went from collections of useful plants to be the material used by taxonomists for alpha taxonomy, detection, description, and classification of taxa. Herborization is an important practice not only for botanical works but it is a key to Ethnopharmacobotany. The concept of Ethnobotany is more ecological, centered specifically on the relationship and interaction between humankind and plants. The objective of Ethnopharmacology is the validation of remedies used by traditional communities for the treatment of health. This process is performed by isolating active substances and characterizing the pharmacological action of those substances. An interesting work would be an ethnopharm aceutical investigation of the botanical collections of herbaria placed in museums or academic institutions. Herbarium samples are currently widely acknowledged as an essential document to validate the ethnopharmacobotanical investigations.
