ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the importance of giving care to patients that actively promotes privacy and dignity. It discusses issues in communication and the impact of this on care and examines the health professional’s role in safeguarding the interests of their patients. The chapter also discusses the indicators of abuse, describes the different types of abuse, and proposes the need to manage suspected abuse effectively. It looks at why it is necessary to give care that actively promotes dignity. Many patients because of their illness or disability may be unable to protect themselves from abuse. Training in the prevention, recognition and management of abuse is essential for all healthcare workers. The chapter considers dignity, privacy and respect in context with cultural awareness and communication. Healthcare workers need to familiarise themselves with what is considered acceptable behaviour and then respond accordingly, it’s about treating everyone equally.
