ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a case study to show how important it is to assess people while we complete tasks such as washing and dressing. It explores issues relating to personal hygiene in the context of practice and identifies the roles of the nurse and other health professionals. The chapter explores the value of intra-agency work and also identifies aids and equipment used. It discusses physical, emotional, spiritual and cultural aspects of giving personal care and the involvement of patients and carers in planning and evaluating personal care. The chapter aims to develop awareness of the prevention and control of infection in healthcare settings. Helping to maintain a person’s personal hygiene is one of the most important jobs a nurse does. Hygiene is essential for all people. Dictionary definitions describes the practice of hygiene as keeping oneself and one’s environment clean to prevent illness and disease.
