ABSTRACT

The design of Amba Aradam underground station has undergone several changes from the tender design to the construction phase. The archaeological investigations have resulted in a new positioning of the station in an area with lower archaeological risk as well as relevant changes in the construction phases and the technologies implemented. Amba Aradam station was originally placed in Largo dell’Amba Aradam in the preliminary design and it was moved twice in the following design phases. Presently it is placed in Piazzale Ipponio. At the beginning of the archaeological excavations, the remains of a barracks dating from the Ancient Roman period were found at a depth of 6 m below ground level. This was an exceptional archaeological finding, for both the size and the good state of conservation of the ancient structures, so that the Archaeological Ministerial Office prescribed Metro C to change the Amba Aradam design to safeguard the archeological findings at the end of the excavation.
