ABSTRACT

The city of Ismailia is located in the Eastern part of Egypt near the Sinai Peninsula and close to the Suez Canal. In August 2014 the Egyptian Government’s Ministry of Defense and the Engineering Authority of the Armed Forces, awarded several projects to enhance the development of the Sinai region (Eastern region of Egypt). The Ismailia Road Tunnel project consists of the construction of two new highway tunnels under both the old and new Suez Canals. A careful consideration of the tunneling technique to be used for the construction has been done before choosing a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) Mix Shield (slurry) for the construction of the 4.84 km long. The external diameter of the tunnel is13m and the internal is 11.4 m. The surrounding geological area is composed of a very dense sand with traces of clay and a high hydrostatic pressure.
