ABSTRACT

The city of Trieste, like many urban centers, suffers from a lack of facilities dedicated to car parking. Thus, in 1996, the idea of creating a parking space under the San Giusto hill was born. CIPA S.p.A. carried out the works related with the tunneling (consisting in the execution of the excavation works and the lining of the ventilation shaft, the entrance tunnel, the caverns, the transects, the pedestrian tunnel and other minor tunnels), as well as those related with the construction of all the reinforced concrete structures. The caverns were approximately 120 m long with a total section of approx 315 m2, inside which the multi-storey buildings have been built. The ventilation shaft had a depth of 63 m and an excavation diameter of 9.60 m. It has been executed with the underpinning methodology, with 2 meters each step. The location of the work and the characteristics of the tunnels turn this work a fascinating one but at the same time delicate enough to require attention and particular technical expertise during its execution.
