ABSTRACT

The Genoa Bypass project, known as the “Gronda di Genova”, has been promoted by the concessionaire Autostrade per l’Italia S.p.A. to overcome the congestion of the highway system in the Genoa area.

After a complex process of public debate and interaction with the territory, the design was developed to a further stage and in the 2016 it was submitted to the Ministry of Transportation for the final approval.

The new motorway network develops almost entirely underground, through 25 new tunnels having a total length of 50 km.

From the geological standpoint, the Genoa Bypass route crosses a region of great structural complexity, where the Alpine orogenic domain is juxtaposed to the Apennine domain.

The construction works will be divided into five functional lots and will have an overall duration of 10 years; the tunnels excavation will proceed simultaneously on multiple fronts, starting from the construction sites strategically located in the project area.
