ABSTRACT

The Bucharest metro Line-5 plays a strategic role to improve the urban transport system, connecting the new Raul-Doamnei station to the existing Eroilor-1 station. Tunnelling works were carried out by two 6.6m diameter EPB machines. The most critical point of the project is the passage of TBMs at about 1m below the bottom slab of the operating station. Due to the high-risk level of impacting the station stability and functionality during tunnelling, detailed excavation procedures and mitigation measures were designed by the Contractor. To verify the efficiency of the designed measures, a detailed 3D FEM analysis was developed prior to the commencement of the works. The analysis results validated the Contractor’s procedures and identified the most critical aspect of the tunnelling beneath the station. Accordingly, a detailed follow-up procedure was implemented during the tunnelling works to check the compliance of the excavation procedures and station behaviour during the TBM advancement.
