ABSTRACT

Nice Côte d’Azur Metropole has initiated the construction of a second tramway line, which will ultimately link Nice Côte d’Azur airport with the port of the city.

The first segment of this line is an underground section between the Boulevard Grosso and Ségurane Street, which serves 4 stations on its route. The technical challenge lies in limiting the impact of construction on existing buildings, while digging in a variety of grounds, ranging from very raw and permeable soils to clayey soils. Another challenge was to reduce the duration of the works.

This article presents the measures implemented to limit settlement of the surrounding structures, the observational method developed to adapt measures based on the conditions encountered and the innovative solutions developed at the tunnel and station interfaces to meet the program requirements: for some stations, the tunnel was already built when D-walls were realized and excavation started.
