ABSTRACT

The old bus terminal at Slussen in central Stockholm has been an eyesore for the area for decades. Plans to replace the terminal have finally come to fruition, but because it is located in such an urban area, there has been a shortage of space. So where to build the new bus terminal? Underground of course! But the underground space there is already in use. The existing metro and other facilities are directly adjacent to the planned terminal with very low rock cover. The newly designed departure hall for the bus terminal will pass through an abandoned emergency shelter cavern and the ticket hall will replace an old parking garage. The old parking garage is a bedrock cavern and additional rock excavation is needed in existing caverns to accommodate elevators, escalators and information boards. Unique designs have been applied to solve the challenges in each of these cases.
