ABSTRACT

3 Deck Great Istanbul Tunnel Project aims to connect Europe and Asia under the Bosporus via Metro and Highway systems in a single tunnel. At the intersection of different metro lines, a unique station had to be designed to overcome many challenges such as; high number of passenger transfer demand, rolling stock transfer between different metro lines during operation, high volume of passenger movement, excessive depth of platform level due to the alignment design limitations of the Bosporus crossing, construction of the station under two separate contracts in different time frames, construction of complicated tunnels and station in dense urban patterns and coordination with the municipality and other contractors with respect to planned and ongoing underground projects. This paper will present its readers the encountered problems and developed solutions during the design process of Gayrettepe Station.
