ABSTRACT

Tokiwa work section in Hanshin Expressway Yamatogawa route, including 350m of main track and 500m of Tokiwa West exit ramp, was originally planned to be constructed using cut and cover tunneling method. However, non-open-cut methods were finally selected for the exit ramp to mitigate the inconvenience of local residents due to the restriction to the local road in front of their houses by retaining wall.

We adopted two non-open-cut methods. One was the rectangular-shaped earth pressure balanced(EPB) shield for the separate section of the ramp, which was first trial in Hanshin Expressway and enabled to keep the construction width in the right-of-way limit. Another was the underground widening excavation method to widen the turnout side from the main truck and the outline of this construction was reported in this paper.
