ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the wireless network technologies that have contributed to the increase in the usage of smartphone devices. In this subsection, wireless telecommunication technologies such as Global System for Mobile (GSM), General Packet Radio Service, Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution, and UMTS that are used for mobile communication are discussed. Nowadays, mobile devices especially smartphones are increasingly being used by the users due to a wide range of functionalities they provide. Apart from basic services, such as calling, Short Message Service, audio, video, Multimedia Messaging Service, and other multimedia services, these devices also provide a variety of other services like Internet, office applications, Wi-Fi. Smartphone devices have become dominant for accessing the Internet. Since users frequently use smartphones for carrying out their online sensitive transactions like Internet banking or online shopping, more attacking opportunities are created for the attackers.
