ABSTRACT

A chart showing the prophets, deities or originators of all religions uses the image of Delhi's Jama Masjid for Islam, even though it shows Emperor Akbar as the originator of the new creed called Deen-e Ilahi. Some Hindu nationalist organisations have been producing a body of printed images, such as greeting cards for New Year or the Divali festival, that depict Mother India giving a call against alien cultural domination, that is, Westernisation, Christianity and Islam. More research may probably reveal the fuller impact of the printing press and nationalism on the syncretism of Islamic images. However, the one type of printed images that may have provided a popular feel-good factor of belonging among Indian Muslims was that of calendar images showing community-based stereotypes. The image of a pious Muslim woman in popular posters is not very different from the same depicted in popular Hindi cinema.
